About Bikfalva

Bikfalva

Bikfalva (Bicfalău) lies in a picturesque environment at the foot of the Bodzafordulói (Întorsurii Mountains), in the foreground of beech woods. The village had been registered in 1332. According to the national census from 2002, Bikfalva (Bicfalău) has got a population of 379 persons. The elementary school of the village stands near the highway DJ-103 B built by the Hungarian state and is one of the 400 public elementary schools built in the year 1896. On the façade of the school there is a memorial plaque: “To the memory of 1000 years of existence of Hungary”. From the historic Reformed fortified church we can only see its medieval tower and the irregular, oval, crenellated ruins of the fortress built in the 16-17th century. The today’s bell-tower was a self-defending tower. With its narrow loop-holes is unique in the county. Its original, lantern cupola had been replaced in 1937 - after Debreczeni László’s project - by a pyramidal cupola. Instead of the small gothic church a new one was built in 1863. The historical bell of the church is the work of the famous bell-founder and craftsman from Brassó (Braşov), Johannes Neidel from 1640. The ancient cemetery in the churchyard was restored in 2002; the old gravestones were released from the bushes. Among the beautiful mansions in the village is the Simon house in the Big (Nagy) Street built in 1793, with its columned, arched stone porch; the Jantsó house and Zsigmond ÖdÖn’s house in the Church (Templom) Street. The asymmetric, pillar, arched, jutting porch has baroque arcades and designs. Other mansions and country houses: Páll Gergely mansion (1830) in the Big (Nagy) Street, with jutting, gabling, arched porch and robust gateway in baroque style; Molnár mansion on the dam (1822). With the rustic, columned, arched stone porch it is unique in the village; BÖjthe-Cseke mansion (1860); Harkó Lajos house; Vén-Ábrahám country-house, Zátyi house; Páll Gergely house and so on. One can look for the Csiga fortress in the vast forest of Bicfalău (just only 30 minutes from Mókus Pension); the older generation tells interesting stories and legends about this fortress: “The fortress belonged to the giants. They built the fortress and hid their heaps of treasure. The old people tried to find this treasure”. From the fortress to the cellar led spiral stairs. The name of the fortress probably originates from this spiral stairs. The history of Csiga fortress is connected with the legendary rock of Décse. One can find plenty of mushrooms in the Bikfalva (Bicfalău) forest; it is also an excellent hunting territory. Famous people born in the village: the painter and copperplate engraver Koréh Zsigmond (1761-1793) and his disciple Bikfalvi Falka Sámuel (1766-1825), printer and copperplate engraver; Simon Gábor (1857-1907), linguist, teacher, textbook writer. Thanks to the tourist possibilities, the country tourism in Bikfalva (Bicfalău) is gaining ground. In the building of the former Village Hall one can see the permanent ethnographic collection of the Bikkmakk Cultural Society (Bikkmakk Kulturális Egyesület).
